Kraven the Hunter is an action-thriller movie that is supposed to add depth to Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. The movie was directed by J.C. Chandor and it was released on October 6, 2023. The film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson who plays the role of Sergei Kravinoff aka Kraven and attempts to portray the origin of the Marvel anti-hero. The movie attempts to put a more raw, more realistic view of superheroes with elements of revenge, survival and morality in the center of the plot.

Kraven, as there of the most skilled hunters of the marvel lore has his entire story around family dynamics, a deeply troubling history, and the motive of hunting the most deadly beasts whether men or women. Plot Summary

The movie brings us into the life of Sergei Kravinoff, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who is a great hunter and who has been shaped by the ruthless Nikolai Kravinoff. He was a warlord portraying the notion that amoung the weak only the strongest emerge. After he is caught up in an accident involving a lion which leaves Sergei with extreme injuries, Sergei develops a bond with nature which develops sharpened senses and animalistic characteristics.

Craven is not only haunted by his father’s toxic legacy, but also chooses to disengage in the family’s history of violence, aiming of being an apex predator hunter who exterminate the poachers and criminal organizations that are the cause of environmental damage. However, Sergei’s elaborate revenge evolves into a sinister plot after he learns about a centuries old conspiracy involving his own bloodline. In this film, Kraven copes with not only human foes, but also his animal side as he fights his half-brother, Dmitri Smerdyakov (The Chameleon), a shapeshifter and master of disguise, whose allegiances remain a mystery. Calypso (Ariana DeBose): The supernatural aspect of the film is brought about with the ally, mystic Calypso who makes an appearance. The portrayal delivered by DeBose feels Italian and fierce but yet retains an air of mystery surrounding her which adds a mystique to the existing world of the film’s world-building.

Direction and Cinematography

J.C. Chandor employs realism alongside gore during the movie portraying it as a superhero film which is definitely a shift from the cliche. As far as cinematography is concerned, the movie captures more raw and uncut landscapes of wide-open wilderness along with urban decay aiding to kiaven’s man vs wild faceoff. As for the fighting scenes, they are quite ghastly with a crudeness linked to Kraven’s style for a more brutality complex writing. The colors along with animal symbols present in the film compliment the primal tone the film is trying to reach.
