Themes and Analysis
Obsession and Manipulation
The movie manages to demonstrate the effect obsession and manipulation has on controlling their relationships and breaking the normal perception of realty. Hannah’s compulsive lust for power demonstrates how something unchecked eventually leads to dangerous outcomes, whereas Michael’s frailty indicates how easily emotional abuse can be inflicted on a person.
Deception and Betrayal
Our Little Secret which is more than a case of bond breakdown, reveals the fragility of trust. Emma, Hannah, and Michael in their words and actions spin a web of half-truths and hidden agendas that keep the plot taut and galloping.
Guilt and Redemption
At the other end of the story is Emma whose guilt-ridden Self embodies the journey of redemption. It is very personal and intense journey that she undertakes, but at the most abstract level it becomes more about humanity’s desire to seek forgiveness for the sins they have committed.
Cinematography and Visual Style
Of the many facets of the film, the visual tone is quizzical in nature, but rather interesting. Morrison uses soft natural lighting in some scenes while in others it is an overwhelming darkness, both of which highlight the dual nature the characters embody. The use of close shots brings out the intensity of the moment. In contrast, the panoramic shots of the beautiful town integrate things in chilled silence that sets the tone for where the heart of the secrets lies.
