Carry-On

Synopsis

The series Carry-On features Ethan Kopek (Taron Egerton), who plays the role of an up-and-coming TSA agent working at a busy airport and his character is a young, motivated self-starter. During the busy travel periods like Christmas, passengers move through security at a staggering rate, which adds an additional burden to Ethan’s already stressful job.

On what seems like an ordinary day, Ethan meets a bland yet incredibly persistent traveler (Jason Bateman) who possesses the uncanny ability to candy coat unspeakably dark suggestions. Over the course of the film this character is reffered as “Passenger X” and his encounter with Ethan is anything but pleasant; Passenger X gives Ethan a brutal choice: help me get this piece of unchecked luggage on this flight and all will be okay, otherwise there will be severe consequences for him and his family.

The mood changes dramatically to even more severe when it becomes obvious that this is not an unlucky accident. Passenger X is all too familiar with Ethan’s life, including secrets that should have never been revealed. It becomes evident to Ethan that is family business is not his parents. Strapped with the difficult decision to help or not, he realizes that he is about to make the most important decision of his life.

While the bag — referred to as the “carry-on” — undergoes it’s meticulous logistical scrutiny at the airport, the riddle behind the contents stays relevant. A bomb? A weapon? Something worse? Ethan’s annoyingly watchful supervisor, Agent Higgins (Logan Marshall-Green), along with a feisty FBI field agent, Special Agent Barnes (Leslie Bibb), who already has suspicions of foul play, do not do anything to ease this mental burden.

Steered by the pressure of revealing too much and keeping up the charade, Ethan navigates a difficult mission to alert the authorities without revealing his hand to Passenger X. The film transforms simple concepts of Ethan fleeing from time restrictions to the dual pressure of self-inflicted deadlines and passive aggression into a classic piece of art.

In a bid to broaden the narrative and chase, the story escapes the tight confines of the single location. A few twists here and there — including a jaw-clenching mid-air sequence within a passenger plane — fuel a fast paced narrative that intends to cover more than a single place in the high stakes chase. Even through all the mystery and chaos, the film captures the essence of humanity — a single man battered into extreme rage and self-reflection.

The climax offers a deeply satisfying and anxiety-inducing payoff as all the plot threads tie together. Important details are disclosed, primal motives are revealed, and Ethan ultimately has to make a terminal decision that will impact the rest of his career and life, both aspect’s hinging upon a singular choice.

Direction & Production

Like with other tight-space setting thrillers, Jaume Collet-Serra directed Carry-On with an intent grip on high-concept pacing and visual flare, making him a suitable choice for the film. He transforms ordinary locations security checkpoints, cargo holds, and terminal corridors into suspense-filled pressure cookers. The mastery of pacing and tension showcased in Non-Stop, which is centered around a hijacked plane, demonstrates his experience with similarly themed works.

Always on the lookout for fresh story angles, TJ Fixman, along with Michael Green, who wrote the screenplay, balanced psyche and tension, successfully ratcheting suspense in the character-centric stakes while weaving an intricate, motive-driven plot. Rather than monotonously overcomplicating the story, the dual focus was placed on the psychological tussle between Ethan and Passenger X which smartly steered clear of the unnecessary mazes of complex plotting.

Add Paul Cameron to the list and we have someone who makes airport scenery plague of sterile lighting feel claustrophobic, guaranteeing that movement never loses pace, paired with brisk rhythmical editing blended alongside sterile, fluorescent-lit airport surroundings.

Ottman’s score reinforces the pressure in which Ethan finds himself, fusing driving rhythms with suspenseful orchestration to increase the tension at every possible moment.
