Accompanying the sisters is their emotionally detached uncle charlie and his son Daniel who further serve to add to the already complex and problematic familial tension.
Right from the start, the sense of trauma wrapped up in a great deal of unresolved conflict waits to explode at any moment. There is not one ounce of holiday cheer in the air, considering the appendage and haunting the overdose of the family’s collective past brings with it. The stern and distant grandmother is dead now and there is this house along with all her belongings. But there is a perceptive understanding of what is to come, hinting at the fact that they may very well be on the verge of leading this family reunion this family reunion into something infinitely darker.
In the midst of unexplained sounds, the family chillingly begins to loosen. The skeletal figure of an ancient old woman, for instance, pictures and dry spells of desolation. To their dismay, strange drawings, cryptic symbols, rustic puzzles folk sketches and ancient folk texts bring to their notice a being called Frau Perchta, otherwise known as the ‘Christmas Witch’. Unlike the rest Krampus, who is famed for being the dark side of Christmas for punishing naughty children, Frau Perchta is an elder figure, way scarer and ancient. Her verdicts are absolutely devoid of mercy. Adults and children undergo the same terror, devoid of any virtue and past deeds. Merely being found guilty gives you the indisputably horrific fate of your insides being brutally swapped with straw and rocks.
He let the roller coaster of strangeness begin. Dinnae cash for your lifetime and slowly waiting. Legend, which the sisters first toss into the lap of lunacy and defines hating pretty quickly manifest and materialize as a brute tale set in stone. It is chilling how sharply the plot unfolds. Bruyazka, the matriarch and their grim grandmother was much more in factors of reality. Wrath of her “beloved,” as she tended to sickly mum never showed vivid proof of her life being spent which turns out, defended the spirit of Frau Perchta while they both attended to her sickly figure hidden behind their duties with odius spells and potions.
As the family gets hunted one-by-one, the movie escalates into an intense fight for survival. The sisters must uncover the truth about their past if they wish to break the spell, contain the hysteria, and reconcile with one another in the nick of time. In the end, Granny Krampus chills the audience with a heartbreaking yet profound ending that makes them wonder whether some sins are ever really redemptive, or if the past will always haunt.

Reception and Ratings on IMDb
As of early 2025, Granny Krampus holds a modest IMDb rating of 4.6/10, reflecting a split among critics and viewers. While some noted the lack of jump scares in favor of psychological tension and folklore a unique directional decision, horror enthusiasts criticized the film for its slow burn approach, arguing the pacing was too subdued for fans of visceral or fast-paced gore.
The film is not really scary, but it is captivating in its tone and themes. It brings the horrors of one’s family history, guilt, and resentment in a less gory, emotional yet haunting way. The appearances of Frau Perchta are not for the faint-hearted as she is deeply unsettling with her ragged cloak, skeletal hands, stitched mouth, and the ghostly presence of punishment and sorrow, which makes her creature design terrifying.
Concluding Remarks
Unlike other Christmas horror movies, Granny Krampus does not focus on the holidays. It emphasizes the secrets blending into pain that gets passed on for generations, taking a psycho-emotional approach rather than showcasing cringe worthy kills and jump scares. It is rather refreshing for the audience looking for folklore focused, grim horror since it makes them ponder, albeit not in the scariest way.
Even if the pacing may be a bit slow for some, the mixed responses do not take away the joy of folk horror enthusiasts. Unlike other endeavors which approach the Christmas theme, this one focuses on the mythos of Frau Perchta and utilizes her in ways that are rarely seen on screen. It puts a focus on dark and contemplative sides of the usual holiday horror films.
Ultimately, the Granny Krampus puts less emphasis on the Christmas witch and more on the narratives behind every family’s hidden truths that demand to be uncovered regardless of the season.
