Synopsis
I Am Legend is an apocalyptic dystopian science fiction film released in 2007, directed by Francis Lawrence and starring Will Smith who delivers one of the most touching performances of his career. The movie is adapted from the 1954 novel by Richard Matheson. It focuses on the themes of isolation, survival, and the hope in a man-made world destructed by apocalypse.
The setting of the story is in a New York City that is almost entirely devoid of life and is falling apart. The begins the story years after a cancer cure virus is genetically modified. The world’s population is wiped out by the Krippin Virus which mutates and is lethal to 90% of people infected. 9% of people are transformed into monstrous, vampiric mutants called “Darkseekers”. They are incredibly violent, cannibalistic, and kill anything that is exposed to UV light. Only a small portion of humanity is left immune. However, a significant number of them are infected and hunted down and killed by those who are infected.
Dr. Robert Neville (Will Smith) is a brilliant virologist and ache military officer who appears to be the last uninfected human in New York. To the City that Never Sleeps, he is a recluse – a man who chose to dedicate his entire life in the hope of finding a possible cure for what is referred to as ‘The Virus’. Obstinately guarding civilization from ‘Darkseekers’ that travers the city seeking prey, Sam is not only his loyal friend in the storm but also his ingenious creation. Sam is an advanced German Shepherd and frequently assists in Bri’s sci-fi inspired plotting schemes. Small gum drops entertain not just his brute force but also the chilling army of mannequins – he uses on his failed attempts to convince the monsters. The Darkseekers are not only what is fighting for staying above ground – he fend off his own mutated city living system.

To this date, Neville’s weapon was the virus and his enemies were the Darkseekers. To perpetuate the monumental task of seeking to destroy Darkseekers, Lord Neville is testing experimental pheromone serums on blood he drew from himself. His etches of hope make it clear that he would sue genetic engineering’s most preposterous advances, had it not been for the dread pervading a systematic anxiety following the humiliation each new serum promises his spirit. During the probing serum tests, we discern phantom flashes of suppressed memories of supposed ‘civilized’ societies during his husband and father duties like the tragic family outing to attempt an evacuation from Helbridge the military had brashly strategized.
Blissfully cradling this tentative pattern would culminate into shatters in the unprecedented account of the evolution of the universe through an eye of a dream included a sequence of infected dogs for the sole purpose of guarding a dog-eat-dog world outing Sam, shattering any semblance of normality. Unable to unhand the cold, lethal dagger of betrayal searching for the very embodiment of isolation to surrender to unleash apocalyptic cascades of suppressed dread, Neville spins in an infinite void cascading shockwaves in outer space with Sam. A desperate escape from the know bulb of madness grabbing for control finds him battling against entire horde of Darkseekers he sets on single handedly purging them of for vice for the intoxication of romance rendezvous sans leaving a nightfall alive.
Neville reaches his lowest point after being rescued by a survivor from Maryland, Anna (Alice Braga), and a young boy named Ethan. Anne explains that they listened to his radio broadcast and came to New York looking for shelter and sanctuary. Although he is heart-broken, weary of survivors’ claims because of years of disappointment and loss, Anna explains about a survivors’ colony in Vermont. While they try to manage their differences, other people’s presence tends to bring Neville from the edge of the cliff.
This, however, attracts the attention of Darkseekers to Neville’s location. In an intense standoff, Neville realizes that his newest attempt at an injection is producing results on a woman he attempted to infect. As Anna and Ethan try to hide inside a fortified escape hatch, Neville gives Anna a vial of the cure, but in order to protect the cure, continues his experiments. To shield the cure he must destroy Darkseekers. While some declare him a villain, others view the act of detonating a grenade men as heroic.
With Anna and Ethan reaching the promised land with the survivors’ colony, Neville’s mission is finally achieved. His journal, recorded beforehand, and sacrifice become part of the legacy that leads to humanity’s potential salvation. For both the scientific achievement and an act of selflessness, the final voiceover announcing Neville as a legend is fitting.
