Lust Stories

Synopsis

Lust Stories is an Indian 2018 anthology film that aims to and succeeds in pushing the limits of Indian cinema. The film comprises four distinct short films from four prominent filmmakers – Karan Johar, Zoya Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap, and Dibakar Banerjee – focusing on the theme of desire, especially from the women’s point of view, thereby breaking boundaries and countering the portrayal of sexuality in Indian cinema.

Lust Stories encompasses a variety of themes such as love, power, social norms and self-discovery. Each of the stories stays true to the nature of fantasies intertwining love and lust and presenting in a fearless manner which in essence make the anthology into one big relatable adventure.

The first story directed by Anurag Kashyap depicts Kalindi’s character played by Radhika Apte who works as a college professor. Kalindi participates in a one-night stand with her student Tejas who is only a graduating class away from her. What starts off as impulsive behavior evolves into a deeply reflective experience when she starts tangentially documenting her emotions and feelings onto video diaries. With Kalindi wanting freedom with choices, she struggles with the idea of social propriety and expectations set by society. Her modern take through the lenses of monotony of everyday relationships, female desire, self deception and fierce honesty is an important message that needs to be heard.

The second episode is directed by Zoya Akhtar: it centers around a domestic worker, Sudha (played by Bhumi Pednekar) shackled within a certain class strata and a physical attachment to a bachelor named Ajit (Neil Bhoopalam) who employs her. Their romance is ritualistic and fits into the daily activities of a mundane life, but Sudha’s dreams of a deeper relationship are brutally shattered when Ajit’s family comes in to set up a marriage for him. Without words and full of images, Zoya offers commentary mourning the absence of aspiration while addressing the disparity between the social classes, resulting in an emotional void.

The third story is about an older and more intricate audience with Reena, a married woman played by Manisha Koirala, who is having an affair with her husband’s friend Sudhir (Jaideep Ahlawat). The film tackles a mid-life crisis with the boredom of marriage, to add an exploration of self-empowerment. When Reena decides to tell her unsuspecting husband about her dirty secret, the brutal honesty spins her relationship into chaos, revealing how fragile a bond can be when built from sameness and facades.

The last story that Karan Johar directed takes a comedic approach while being equally poignant. Kiara Advani, as Megha, portrays a newlywed woman who is torn between her sexual urges and an equally unfamiliar husband. Rekha (Neha Dhupia), her more seasoned friend, guides Megha into the world of self-exploration which ends awkwardly and hilariously — quite literally — at a family shindig. In Johar’s segment, humor and frankness are merged on the topic of a woman’s sexual satisfaction which, to many people’s surprise, is something Indian cinema seldom focuses on.

Step-by-step, with empathy and without judgment, scrutiny, or dramatics, Lust Stories moves through its four parts peeling back societal pretenses and exposing the uncomfortable truths surrounding desire. The film graciously gives space for its characters to showcase their flaws and vulnerabilities, unapologetically embracing what it means to be human.

Critical acclaim and ratings on IMDb

Lust Stories boasts a remarkable 6.6/10 rating on IMDb. Though at face value this rating might appear average, the film’s reception is a testament to its audacious approach and unabashed themes. It fueled crucial debates about women’s aspirations, consent, and the multifaceted emotional layers of relationships in modern India.

As a striking milestone in Indian cinema, critics received the anthology praising the directors for spearheading the debates that many prefer to sidestep. Notably, Radhika Apte and Kiara Advani were celebrated by most for their portrayals with Kiara’s segment receiving heightened attention in the media and public discourse for its explicit celebration of female pleasure.”

Not all critics were as equally impressed, for storytelling gaps did exist, owing to personal preferences differing from one section to the other. Regardless, the overarching criticism remains that this installment is an audacious, exhilarating, and much needed appendage to the developing feature films of India – Lust Stories.

Even more so from the younger demographics, the audience reception praised the film for its candidness and relatability. The feature became a heated point of debate on all social media platforms as people celebrated the film for breaking out of clichéd Bollywood romances. Its popularity also opened doors for subsequent projects like Ghost Stories and Ajeeb Daastaans, further solidifying the anthology format as a medium for bold storytelling in India.

Conclusion

Beyond the themes of an anthology, Lust Stories portray an ever-changing statement in India’s cinema, shattering societal expectations and embracing autonomy while simultaneously and seamlessly humanizing the characters in their endearingly, intricately unstructured forms. By starkly presenting women’s feelings and thoughts pertaining to lust, the film reshapes the discourse surrounding sexuality in Indian cinema. Each director commands the film in his own distinctive perspective, resulting in a harmonious yet fragmented depiction of yearning, connection and self-confrontation. For those in search of narratives that are as forthright as they are engaging, Lust Stories is a must watch.
