Synopsis
The primary plot develops around Kelly Macdonald’s character Kate Frazier, who is a victim of domestic violence and is attempting to piece her life together after escaping from an abusive marriage. She relocates to Chicago with the hopes of starting over, but the sheer scale of the city keeps her anonymity. Unfortunately, her traumatic past continues to follow her, and her emotionally guarded personality indicates that she underwent significant suffering during her marriage.
While exiting work one winter day, Kate sees a man standing on a ledge on a rooftop and appears to be about to jump off. Frank’s Logan character, played by Michael Keaton, is a professional assassin, and from the looks of it, his life contains nothing but deserted and depressing voids. The shocking stare she gives him pulls him back from the ledge, which is she does not regain composure quick enough to retain her intended shock. Within the man lies a person desperately struggling under the burden of sustained choices within a hollow existence.
Their brush with chance creates an unexpected bond. Frank is drawn to Kate’s quiet endurance, surprising for someone like him who has lived a life deprived of violence and company. On the other hand, Kate is wary, yet oddly finds solace and understanding in Frank. The two seem to share an unnamable bond forged silently. This bond is nurtured with caution and tenderness and does not resemble typical romance, rather depicting a shared secure rope aiding two drowning souls amid their emotional wreckages.
At the same time, Frank’s profession comes under the scrutiny of Tom Bastounes playing Detective Dave Murcheson in the latter’s murder investigation. With each new detail Murcheson uncovers along with his growing infatuation for Kate, the line dividing personal from professional motivations becomes increasingly entangled.
The inner struggle Frank endures worsens concerning the fragile bond he shares with Kate and his profession as a killer. In order to safeguard their bond, Frank contemplates if the choice he’s made is worth it. Kate on her end finds herself in a daze, ensnared by an unalterable reality she’s afraid of entwined with the whispers of a future untouched by torment. And while the story progresses, the build-up of tension alters. It shifts from sequences packed with action to emotionally taxing decisions.
