Synopsis
Hany Abu-Assad’s 2017 film The Mountain Between Us is a survival romance drama that intricately interweaves the power of human relationships and the transcendental quality of hope against seemingly insurmountable challenges. This film is based on the book published in 2011 by Charles Martin. The movie casts Idris Elba and Kate Winslet as two strangers who, after being trapped in a horrific plane crash, must depend on one another to escape the frozen wilderness of snow for their survival.

The pilot suffers a fatal stroke mid-flight, resulting in the plane crashing into the sprawling, isolated, and perilous region known as the High Uintas Wilderness. Fortunately, all three passengers, including Ben and the dog, survive the crash, but sustain serious injuries and are stranded in a remote mountainous region with no means to call for help. Alex’s injuries ensure that mobility is extremely difficult, while Ben only suffers minor wounds. Barely clinging to life, the two transform the wreckage into a makeshift base, brewing autonomy giving them the freedom to lessen their burdens and make lifesaving decisions.
Initially, Alex and Ben agree on some makeshift plans. Ben would start the descent while Alex deters his aide waiting optimistically on a search team which he hopes would come in no desperate condition. Their plans adjust with changing circumstances, in this case Ben’s increasingly harsh weather conditions, and aid promptly arriving in the form of the two men Ben tasks with solving his story. Ben later calls out the solo-search, leading outside the prolonged shelter, which deepens the uncertainty. Reaching out on the solo venture clenches unto the hand of civilization, a welcoming sight at last.
The final segment of the film shifts away from identifying the need for survival, instead concentrating on the psychological ramifications. After being rescued, both Alex and Ben are forced to come to terms with their relationship while returning to their pre-rescue lives. While Alex is set to marry her fiancé, Ben finds it difficult to blend back into his own world.
