Following years of turmoil, bloodshed, and a strong appetite for sweets, the last installment of Sony’s “Venom” Trilogy, “Venom: The Last Dance,” debuted in theaters in October 2024. The film’s release completes the franchise’s storyline with riveting action, unabashed emotion, and overwhelming intergalactic drama. Once again, Tom Hardy reprises his role as Eddie Brock along with his alien symbiote Venom, who has captured audience’s attention since 2018 and marks the finale of the story arc.
This film is directed by Kelly Marcell, who has been deeply associated with the franchise for a long time and has also written a number of films in the sequels. With the introduction of Knull, the God of the Symbiotes, and other compelling elements from the Marvel Universe, they hope to finish the narrative around Eddie and Venom in a darker, more reflective, and richer lore story, “Venom: the Last Dance.”
Synopsis
Following the plot of the previous installment, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, this film starts with Eddie temporally entering the known Cinematic Marvel Universe. Now back to his own world, Eddie Brock alongside his counterpart are currently fugitives not just from the government, but from other extraterrestrial entities as well.
In the initial sequence of the film, Eddie and Venom are on the run. Thanks to the past films’ destruction and multidimensional wreckage, they now rank among the most wanted. They are being hunted down by a secret group that aims to capture them so they can extract symbiote DNA from their bodies, something that makes them go into hiding.
Worse things are still awaiting them. A crack in the symbiote hive mind informs Venom that Knull, the first and cruelest entity of all symbiotes, who has slept for thousands of years, is about to come. He has gotten out of his deep slumber and is heading towards earth to seize what he thinks is his, including Venom.
In the face of Eddie and Venom coming to terms with their existence, the reality of the world shifts perilously. They are also having to face the rippling effects of Knull’s migh, which is expanding and causing trouble all over the planet. At the same time, with destruction raining from the skies, both new humans, extraterrestrials, friends and foes arise, all with their own reason to partake in the approaching mayhem.
Casts and Their Performance
Tom Hardy never fails to deliver on his dual performance as Eddie and Venom. His portrayal continues to be the heart of the franchise, delivering slapstick comedy blended with emotional depth. His chemistry with himself is, as strange as that may sound, remains one of the highlights of the film. Eddie and Venom bicker like an old married couple, and underlying their comedic clashes is a codependent relationship that is taken to the extreme in this film.
Chiwetel Ejiofor joined this cast as a fierce antagonist with an enigmatic past surrounding the symbiotes. The role he plays is complex, augmenting tension and bringing additional weight to the story, especially during the moral dilemmas involving science, ethics, and survival encountered throughout the film.
Juno Temple appears as Dr. Teddy Paine, a docile scientist specializing in Symbiote biology. However, the character has much more potential than what is given. Nevertheless, Temple proves to be a warm and caring character.
Stephen Graham reprises his role as Detective Mulligan, who suffered his own share of the symbiotic energy exposure from the previous movie. Readers of the comic books will be able to trace the clues to this character transforming into the symbiote Toxin.
Peggy Lu is back as Mrs. Chen, delivering warmth and her signature humor. Since the last installment, her dynamic with Venom has became a fan-favorite, and this film does not fail in highlighting their continual unusual rivalry.
Andy Serkis lends his vocal talents to Knull, the film’s ultimate threat. Even though he did not direct this installment, his bone-chilling performance as the god of darkness surely makes the legends come alive.
Themes and Tone
Venom: The Last Dance moves away from the purely buddy-comedy environment of the previous installment and delves deeper into sci-fi horror, epic mythology, and emotional closure. It tackles issues of selfhood, duality, redemption, and sacrifice. Eddie and Venom no longer simply exist together; they are actively dealing with what the two of them mean to one another in a world teeming with predators, gods, and all-controlling government systems.
Director Kelly Marcel has made the film more authentic by letting the characters deal with loss and legacy. However, in true Venom style, the movie does not lose its signature humor. One-liners, bedazzling remarks about craving for brains, and sharp-witted Venom commentary is in full force while the chaos erupts, adding a dose of lightheartedness.
Visual Effects and Action
The advanced technologies of today have enabled a distinct advancement in visual effects, such as in the scenes containing Knull and his army of possessed symbiotes. His entry is accompanied with the stormy weather and black tendrils spreading like a disease, foreshadowing inevitable destruction, akin to Lovecraftian style. This time, action scenes are more intricately choreographed, featuring even more large scale destruction and monster fights compared to previous movies.
One prominent example is Eddie and Venom arguing over dinner while trying to break into a top security lab. The balance of tension and absurdity is something that the Venom franchise has always managed to deliver, and this scene is a perfect example.
Reception and Legacy
The majority of the audience has reacted positively to the film while critics have been mixed. He drew a lot of praise for his passion in the role as well as for the introduction of ‘Knull’ and the story’s emotional depth. There was also some commentary regarding the film’s sometimes erratic shifts in pace and tone, but regardless, fans appreciated the trilogy’s attempt at putting character continuity and storytelling development together.
The conclusion is deeply moving and wraps up Eddie’s storyline neatly while still leaving possibilities for further development within Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. It is yet to be determined if Venom will make other appearances or editions into different franchises, but The Last Dance makes it clear that Eddie’s journey ends powerfully with him.
Final Thoughts
Venom: The Last Dance is more than a finale—it marks the final appearance of one of the cinematic universe’s most comical and lovable antiheroes. With heavier tones, mythos, and heartwarming moments of Eddie and his gooey counterpart, it ties up a franchise that has never shied from being strange, wild, and wonderfully bizarre.
In a world overwhelmed with righteous caped superheroes, Venom emerges more primal and human. His last dance is certainly the most significant one.
