Synopsis
Damsel (2024) is an action-adventure dark fantasy film directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo with a screenplay by Dan Mazeau. Unlike what the film’s title suggests which draws to a fairytale, the movie instead offers a spellbinding story of betrayal, survival, and courage against a strange setting.
It is based on a medieval fairy tale in which a noble-woman Princess Elodie (Millie Bobby Brown) finds herself embroiled in a lady’s problematic marriage. At the beginning of the movie, Elodie seems to start life the with typical fairy tale courtesy: getting picked to marry Prince Henry (Nick Robinson) who is the beloved heir of Aurea, a big kingdom. It is a common practice for kingdoms to set political marriages because they serve to strengthen alliances between their lands.
Like any other intelligent and responsible person, Elodie shows loyalty to her family and people by accepting the marriage which leads to political alliance. So she sets out with family: father, Lord Bayford (Ray Winstone), step-mother Lady Bayford (Angela Bassett) to prepare for the royal wedding to Prince Henry. To the surprise of many, the kingdom itself seems to live perpetually bathed in wealth alongside tradition. Queen Isabelle (Robin Wright) serves as the monarch of the Kingdom and rules with a customary but severe hand.
In contrast, the story takes a dark turn as the ceremonial festivities come to an end. Instead of living happily ever after, Elodie faces a nightmarish scenario: she is turned on by her new royal in-laws and is offered as a sacrifice to a fire-breathing dragon in an ancient ritual meant for protecting the kingdom. The kingdom enjoys prosperity through the sickening practice of feeding young maidens to the dragon, which the beast accepts in exchange for peace and prosperity.
Her royal garments are stripped off, as if she is to be left to die in the dragon’s den, and with that, Elodie’s character arc transforms from passive princess to a more active role of survivor. She finds herself in a treacherous labyrinth of caves, hunted by a monstrous winged beast. To survive, she must rely on her intelligence, self-determination, resourcefulness, and bravery. The vibrant fantasy setting turns from a fantastical realm into a life and death battleground for Elodie.
In contrast to traditional fairy tale heroines waiting to be rescued, in Fairyland, Elodie actively seeks out her own destiny. Over the course of her challenges, she is no longer a sheltered princess, but has transformed into a fierce warrior. She uses the environment around her to craft weapons, evade the dragon’s gaze, and study its movements so that she can confront and engage with the terrifying creature head-on. Her journey goes beyond mere survival; it is a fight to reclaim control over her life in the face of forces that aim to destroy her.
The film provides us with flashbacks that offer some insight into Elodie’s upbringing. The love and care of her father while nurturing her resilience and the quiet strength of her mother add further context. These moments bolster the emotion, capturing her shift from a politically motivated pawn to a woman empowered to be the protagonist of her own life.
As we approach the climax, Elodie finally has her chance to get her revenge against her would-be executioners. Her battle with the dragon is both brutal and intense, while also containing the most impressive action sequences blending high quality visual effects with stunt work. Even with all of the visceral action, the battle serves as a metaphor for her defiance against the systems that wished to consume her.
In the conclusion, Elodie not only survives but also dares to face the Aurea royal family, confronting their cruelty and the dark history they have kept hidden for decades. No longer willing to be a mere pawn in someone’s game, she reclaims her autonomy and rewrites the story’s conclusion – not as a victim, but a victor.
Cast & Crew
The cast of Damsel features Millie Bobby Brown in an outstandig lead performance, supported by a rich cast who give depth and nuance to this tale of dark fantasy.
Millie Bobby Brown as Princess Elodie
Brown brings Elodie to life and carries the film, and it’s her performance that shapes the narrative. From Stranger Things to Enola Holmes, Brown has shown her talent and in this film she does not disappoint, transforming from an innocent princess to a fearless survivor. Her strong presence and emotional range propel the story, cementing Elodie as a compelling figure.
Nick Robinson as Prince Henry
Robinson features as Prince Henry, charming and yet duplicitous. He portrays a character whose public display of affection is at odds with his role in the kingdom’s dark practices. His performance showcases a character whose struggles within him with tradition and conscience.
Robin Wright takes up the role of Queen Isabelle
Wright brings an icy ferocity to Queen Isabelle, the calculating queen who supervises the sacrificial rites. Her presence adds tension to the narrative as she becomes a ruthless adversary.
Angela Bassett as Lady Bayford
Lady Bayford marks a subtle shift in character for Bassett, who offers maternal wisdom and strength that hints at layers of political intrigue.
Ray Winstone fathered Lady Bayford, Elodie’s father
Winstone plays Elodie’s father, demonstrating love for his daughter. While small, his role deepens the emotional stakes in Elodie’s story.
Fresnadillo, director of 28 Weeks Later, uses his expertise to create an unfalteringly cohesive juxtapose of dread and wonder—his direction stresses the scale of fantasy as survival horror, crafting a visceral experience.
In a mix of fascinating prose, the screenwriter teases the audience with a presumption that the princess will faint after being captivated by a hussar. Mazeau offers Elodie not just the chance, but the power—like a puppet master—to dictate the trajectory of her tale. That’s a refreshing turn on the age-old damsel in distress plot.
The film’s visual effects team in particular needs to be acknowledged for the work done on the dragon which is both terrifying and grand. With stunning filming and an evocative score, the film’s production value surpasses expectations.
